Obamacare Will Protect Diabetics

ds-2The start of Obamacare will protect diabetics, as those with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes will have choices for coverage and benefits.

But the biggest advantage to diabetics will be that starting on Jan. 1, 2014, insurers will not be able to cancel or deny coverage to people with diabetes. That means they cannot turn down diabetics for coverage, cancel the policies of those that develop diabetes and refuse to pay for diabetes treatments.

Another big advantage many people will see is that health insurance physicals will be a thing of the past. You won’t have to submit your medical records or get a blood test when you apply for health insurance anymore.

Diabetics and Obamacare

The good news is that diabetics will be able to participate in health insurance exchanges being organized under Obamacare. The companies competing for business in those exchanges will not be able to deny coverage to diabetics.

Better yet, many diabetics will be eligible for federal tax credits that will help them pay for health insurance. The amount of the credit is determined by your income but individuals making up to $46,000 a year and families and couples making up to $92,000 a year will be able to participate in the exchanges and qualify for the credit.

Covered for Diabetics

Most diabetics will be better off with a low deductible and a policy that covers 100% of testing and prescription drugs for their disease. The testing is included under preventive medicine in most health insurance policies.

If you have a slightly higher income you might be better off with a higher deductible or a health savings account because those policies often provide a lot more coverage. Something diabetics should consider is that persons with a condition like diabetes are more likely to suffer from other health problems.

You should also make sure that the policy covers your existing doctor and pharmacy if you want to continue with your doctor. Not every policy does and some policies don’t cover online pharmacies. Make sure you can actually use the insurance before buying it.

Available for Most Diabetics

The really good news is that health insurance will now be available for most diabetics. Many people who formerly relied on Medicaid or went without insurance will be able to get it. Every diabetic should go to his or her state’s health insurance exchange and try to buy a policy. Even though a lot of us don’t like it, Obamacare looks like it’s going to be a pretty good deal for diabetics.
